Understanding Why Cats Scratch
Before we dive into solutions, it’s important to understand that scratching is completely natural and healthy for cats. Your feline friend isn’t trying to destroy your furniture out of spite—they’re following instincts that have been hardwired into them for thousands of years. Scratching serves multiple purposes: it marks territory, maintains nail health, provides a good stretch, and relieves stress.
The key to solving furniture damage isn’t to stop your cat from scratching altogether (you can’t and shouldn’t try), but rather to redirect this behavior toward appropriate surfaces. Once you understand the motivation behind the scratching, addressing it becomes much easier and more humane.
1. Invest in High-Quality Scratching Posts
The foundation of any successful scratching solution is the right scratching post. Most cats prefer sisal rope or corrugated cardboard, though some enjoy carpet or jute. The post must be tall enough for your cat to stretch their full body while scratching—typically at least 30 inches for average cats. A stable base is essential; wobbly posts feel unsafe and cats will ignore them.

Consider getting multiple posts of varying heights and textures. Some cats are picky about their preferences, and variety helps ensure you find what yours likes best. Premium posts with multiple levels or hanging toys can increase engagement and make them more attractive than your couch.
2. Strategic Placement Near Favorite Spots
Location is everything when it comes to scratching posts. Place them near areas where your cat already scratches, sleeps, or spends the most time. Many cats like to scratch after waking up or when they first enter a room, so positioning a post by their favorite sleeping spot works well. This makes the post the natural choice when the scratching urge strikes.
If your cat is particularly fond of scratching a specific piece of furniture, try placing a post directly in front of it temporarily. Once they establish the habit with the post, you can gradually move it to a more aesthetically pleasing location in your home.
